Guest Speakers:

  • Rosmarie Lohnes of Helping Nature Heal will bring us up to date on her Living Shorelines Project. Rosmarie has been working with the Ecology Action Centre on ways to minimize coastal erosion without destroying the living ecosystems of our shorelines.
  • Mary-Frances Lynch will provide an update on the South Canoe Wind Farm.
  • Jamie Simpson will speak on the latest developments in sustainable harvesting practices in Nova Scotia

Windmills are things of beauty

windmillsA recent article from David Suzuki helps to put some of our opinions on windmills into perspective.

“I have a cabin on Quadra Island off the British Columbia coast that’s as close to my heart as you can imagine. From my porch you can see clear across the waters of Georgia Strait to the snowy peaks of the rugged Coast Mountains. It’s one of the most beautiful views I have seen. And I would gladly share it with a wind farm.”

Living Shorelines: A New Approach to Coastal Erosion Management in Nova ScotiaThe Ecology Action Centre, Helping Nature Heal and the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation will be giving a presentation on “living shoreline” approaches to coastal erosion management.

Living shoreline projects use vegetation and other natural materials to help protect land from erosion while allowing the shoreline to retain its dynamic nature and habitat features. Please come learn about how these approaches are being used in Nova Scotia. Continue reading

Protecting Places: Chester Wilderness Areas

Chester, Nova Scotia has two new wilderness areas: South Panuke and Holden Lake. Together these two areas total 8350 ha of land that will now be protected and enjoyed for many generations.
